November is National Diabetes Month. Many adults have prediabetes, but there are many healthy lifestyle changes that can be made to manage prediabetes or prevent diabetes from starting.

  1. Exercise- Limit the time you spend sitting and try to get up and move or exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Movement can be something as simple as a quick walk outside!

  2. Eat and Drink Healthier- Pick foods that are high in fiber, and low in fats and sugars. Eat plenty of vegetables, proteins, and carbohydrates. Make sure to drink plenty of water as well.

  3. Lose Weight- You may be able to prevent diabetes by losing 5-7% of your original starting weight. The healthier weight you are, the less likely the chances are of developing prediabetes or diabetes.

  4. Stop Smoking- Smoking raises your chances of developing diabetes.

  5. Get Vaccinated- People with prediabetes or diabetes are at risk of becoming sicker than others from COVID-19 and the flu. Get vaccinated against COVID and get your annual flu shot to help prevent severe illness.
